Mind Over Matt(er)

mini-break to Edinburgh fringe

It's been a few days since I've even been online, let alone think about writing anything. Normally, I'd be feeling incredibly guilty about it because this is something I should want to be doing every single day1.

Instead, I've spent the last few days enjoying the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and it was definitely worth it.

I got to see some incredible acts such as Mark Simmons and MC Hammersmith and find a new enjoyment of parody burlesque (Swamplesque to be specific).

But one thing it did remind me of is the need to have a proper break every now and again, creatively, I was a spent force. I wasn't doing much of anything and I didn't want to write because I had nothing worth saying.

At least now, I feel like my social battery is drained, but I'm ready to start enjoying the writing process again and having ideas that I want to explore, talk about and see where they lead me to.

Essentially, the point of the post is to act as a reminder to myself that it's important to take breaks - proper breaks, not just having a few hours away from the screen.

Being able to recharge your creative battery is definitely worth it, particularly if (like me) you decide to go and see several comedy shows, musicals and have a lot of great food with even better company.

  1. This is absolutely untrue and don't believe anyone who tells you that.
